Hotel Description

In the pages of history, a humble abode from 1799, initially owned by the Nawab of Arcot and later by John Binny, evolved into the majestic Taj Connemara. By 1854, T. Somasundara Mudalyar envisioned the Imperial Hotel, which transformed under Triplicane Rathinavelu Mudaliar. Renamed Albany in 1886, it became The Connemara in 1890, honouring Madras Governor Robert Bourke.
In 1891, Eugene Oakshott of Spencer's acquired the hotel, and by the 1930s, James Stiven modernised it with an art deco design and a refreshing air system. During World War II, Taj Connemara served as a sanctuary for soldiers, with Lady Connemara offering comfort and refuge. She often strolled the hotel's lawns, sipping tea and reflecting on the timeless beauty and community spirit around her.

In 1984, the Connemara was entrusted to Taj, becoming a heritage hotel with colonial charm. Today, Taj Connemara stands as a symbol of Chennai's rich history, blending heritage and modernity. As you explore its corridors, you become part of a timeless narrative where elegance and history converge, each brick holding a story waiting to be discovered.
